I. “Continue raising the bar”

The year began with a senior class that had already experienced Greenbrier’s 2003 semifinal run. The program’s later 2004 retrospective says those 23 seniors set a spring goal: still be practicing football over Thanksgiving. They opened by avenging the previous year’s Fort Campbell loss, 13–7, as Roger Herndon ran for 184 yards and a touchdown.

Greenbrier followed with a 14–6 win over David Lipscomb — a game in which the contemporary story credited the Bobcat defense with seven sacks — then exploded for 54 points against Beech and shut out Creek Wood 20–0. The Creek Wood story had Greenbrier at 4–0 and ranked No. 2 in the state.

II. The only regular-season loss

White House stopped the start with a 29–13 win. Rather than unravel, the Bobcats immediately built another run. On Homecoming against Montgomery Central, Herndon rushed for 271 yards and five touchdowns in a 42–6 victory and moved past 1,000 yards for the season.

Wins over Sycamore and Page put the region race in Greenbrier’s hands. The 17–13 Page game was specifically framed in the clippings as the win that moved Greenbrier into the region lead. Victories over Marshall County and Giles County completed a 9–1 regular season and a second consecutive Region 5-3A championship.

III. Four Fridays in November

Greenbrier beat McNairy Central 36–14 in Round 1 and then delivered the postseason’s most lopsided result, a 35–0 shutout of Marshall County. Herndon scored three rushing touchdowns and added a receiving touchdown in the rematch.

The quarterfinal at Jackson South Side became a different kind of win. Trailing a team that had allowed only 6.7 points per game, Greenbrier controlled the second half: the contemporary Jackson Sun account says the Bobcats ran 41 plays to South Side’s six and outgained the Hawks 193–9 after halftime. Jacob Aldridge returned an interception 60 yards for Greenbrier’s first score and later sneaked in the game-winner. Final: 14–7.

That sent Greenbrier to Memphis for the first meeting with Kingsbury. The Bobcats won 14–12. With Kingsbury driving late, Adam Adcock intercepted Corey Reed to end the threat and send the Greenbrier sideline — and the clippings — into “State Bound” mode.

IV. Mr. Football

While the playoff run was unfolding, Herndon was named a Mr. Football finalist for the second straight year. The finalist story noted that he was completing a second consecutive 2,000-yard season. He then became Greenbrier’s second Mr. Football winner, following Derrick Lucas in 1994.

The season retrospective fixes the final rushing number at 2,249 yards and his career rushing total at 4,815 yards. The later 100-yard rushing records list eleven Herndon 100-yard games in 2004, plus Jacob Aldridge’s 120-yard game against Sycamore. The Herndon entry against Sycamore is listed without a yardage figure, so the season total remains eleven 100-yard games.

V. Murfreesboro

On December 4, Greenbrier entered the Class 3A BlueCross Bowl at Middle Tennessee State at 13–1. Fulton won 34–6, but the loss did not shrink the season: the Bobcats finished as Class 3A state runner-up, the first football team in school history to play for a state championship.

The postgame retrospective recorded another piece of context: Greenbrier’s 13 wins tied the 1993 Springfield team for the most wins by a Robertson County team at that point. It also credited the 2004 group with the school’s first state-championship-game appearance, consecutive state-semifinal seasons, back-to-back region titles and a 34-win senior class.

The line behind the run

The Robertson County Times named Greenbrier’s offensive line its 2004 Offensive MVP. The clippings says the unit blocked for more than 4,000 yards. The senior retrospective identifies Austin Stratton, Dustin Cole, Dale Krisle, Wade Pearson and Joey Stephens as five starting linemen pictured with Herndon.
