I. Finding the offense

The preseason gave Greenbrier reason for optimism: in an unscored Westmoreland scrimmage, the contemporary story counted seven Bobcat touchdowns to two. The regular season was less tidy. Greenbrier opened with losses to Fort Campbell and David Lipscomb, beat Beech and Creek Wood, and then lost 10–7 to White House to sit at 2–3.

The early-season coverage also explains a major personnel shift. Roger Herndon began the year at quarterback and moved to tailback. A Creek Wood preview records 209 yards on 26 carries against David Lipscomb and 236 on 27 against Beech. The later 100-yard workbook omitted the Beech performance entirely; The contemporary source restores that performance to the season record.

Against Creek Wood, Herndon then ran for 204 yards on only eight carries with touchdown runs of 42, 73 and 9 yards in a 49–7 victory.

II. The rivalry clock keeps ticking

White House escaped Greenbrier 10–7. The Robertson County Times headline did more than report the score: “White House’s streak over Greenbrier at 22.” Herndon ran 19 times for 148 yards, including a 47-yard burst that put the Bobcats deep in White House territory, but Greenbrier came up empty on its late chances.

III. Three weeks for a region championship

Greenbrier recovered with wins over Montgomery Central and Sycamore, then went to Page with the Region 5-3A lead at stake. Page scored late to pull within 21–19, but a swarm of Bobcat defenders stopped the potential tying two-point conversion. The win left Greenbrier alone atop the region.

One week later, Greenbrier beat Marshall County 36–27 to clinch the championship. Kirk Williams told the paper the seniors had dedicated four years to winning a region title. The Bobcats had just beaten Sycamore, Page and Marshall County in three consecutive weeks — the three teams the story identified as the region’s best.

IV. November: shutout, two overtimes, first semifinal

Round 1 was a 27–0 shutout of McNairy Central that explicitly avenged Greenbrier’s 2001 playoff loss. Clint Russell rushed for 125 yards, including 91 after halftime, while Kyle Gainous returned an interception 15 yards for the final touchdown.

The Sycamore rematch became one of the wildest games in the book. Regulation ended 9–9. Sycamore scored first in overtime; Greenbrier answered. In the second overtime, Herndon’s 1-yard touchdown put Greenbrier ahead 23–16. Sycamore scored again and chose to go for two rather than kick for another overtime. Adam Adcock tackled Nathan McVay short of the goal line. Greenbrier survived 23–22. Herndon carried 27 times for 128 yards.

Then came previously unbeaten Crockett County. Herndon ran for 210 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown from six yards with 6:29 remaining. Cameron Armes recovered a late fumble to seal the 20–13 win. Greenbrier was 10–3 and, for the first time, headed to the state semifinals.

V. A town chasing a second 2003 title

The semifinal week broadened the story beyond football. A Tennessean feature was headlined “Greenbrier seeks second ’03 title” and stated that the Lady Cats softball team had already won the school’s first high-school state championship — team or individual — that spring.

The accompanying community feature captured Greenbrier practicing through Thanksgiving week and reached backward in program history: Kirk Williams recalled being a player when Greenbrier made its first state playoff appearance in 1977. In 2003, his team was taking the program farther than it had ever gone.

Covington ended the run 20–6 on a snowy, muddy night. The Chargers rushed for 318 yards; Herndon finished with 99 yards on 20 carries and Greenbrier closed at 10–4. The newspaper’s simple caption was right: “Super season ends for Bobcats.”

VI. Herndon and the postseason honors

Herndon was one of three Class 3A Mr. Football finalists. The finalist story had him at 1,705 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns at that point in the run. The year-end All-Midstate profile supplies the fuller season-level description: nearly 2,300 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns in 14 games, plus First-Team All-Midstate recognition.

Region 5-3A honored Roger Herndon as Player of the Year, Trevor Dickerson as Defensive Player of the Year and Kirk Williams as Head Coach of the Year. The Robertson County Times postseason team also named Herndon its Player of the Year and Dickerson its Defensive MVP.
