GAME STORY / CONTEXT

2004 vs. Marshall Co.

The rematch with Marshall County looked nothing like the region-title clincher three weeks earlier. Greenbrier won 35–0. Contemporary coverage credits Herndon with three rushing touchdowns and another score receiving, while the school rushing register listed on the season page credits him with 191 yards in this playoff game. The 178-yard entry belongs to the regular-season Marshall County meeting.

Wins over Sycamore and Page put the region race in Greenbrier’s hands. The 17–13 Page game was specifically framed in the clippings as the win that moved Greenbrier into the region lead. Victories over Marshall County and Giles County completed a 9–1 regular season and a second consecutive Region 5-3A championship .

CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS

Following the playoff win on radio

Bulldog69 attributed his November 12 account to the radio broadcast. He reported approximately 180 rushing yards for Herndon, rather than the 191 yards listed in the school rushing register for this playoff game, and described the final touchdown run as 33 yards. Another newspaper-excerpt account gives 32 yards for that run. The broadcast station was not named, and the distance difference remains unresolved.
