The rebuild before the bowls
Jerry Pearson’s return produced two bridge seasons before the program’s 1976 jump. The honors register keeps the people visible even when surviving season material is thin.
- 1974: Burt Castleman — All-Mid-State and All-State honorable mention.
- 1975: Tony Reasoner, Steve Castleman, Jimmy Biggs and Dennis Lee — All-Mid-State.
Bowls to the playoffs
Greenbrier went 9–2 and won the Industrial Bowl in 1976, then followed with an 8–3 district championship and the program’s first TSSAA playoff appearance in 1977.
The 1977 scrapbook also preserves the Austin Peay grant-in-aid story that connects Steve Sorrells’ playing days to a later chapter on the Greenbrier sideline.
The handoff and the 1981 peak
After the playoff breakthrough, Buddy Corlew took over in 1979. Mike Clark’s recognition becomes the defining individual thread: the school register records him as first-team All-State in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
The run culminated in the 8–3 1981 team, an Industrial Bowl berth and Greenbrier’s last winning football season until 1999.
The lean middle
The win totals fell, but the honors record keeps names attached to the years: Timmy Williamson and Ronnie Templeton in 1982, Kurt McBee and Mike Payne in 1983, and Micky Cobb and Mike Payne in 1984.
The 0–10 season in 1984 became the low point immediately before one of the sharpest one-year rebounds in the program’s record.
The Tobacco Bowl rebound
Greenbrier answered 0–10 with five wins and a Tobacco Bowl berth. Aaron Sanders earned first-team All-Mid-State recognition, while David Nichols is preserved as the Tobacco Bowl Defensive MVP.
The final Corlew seasons
Ray Jones gives 1986 a major individual anchor: first-team All-State, first-team All-Mid-State and All-District. Aaron Keith, Sam Smith, Shane Stults and William West joined him on the All-District list.
Corlew’s run closed in 1987, with Aaron Keith and William West earning All-District recognition. The next season began the Steve Sorrells head-coaching era.
