1977 · A PLAYER STORY

From Greenbrier to Austin Peay

Steve Sorrells’ senior season connects Greenbrier’s first TSSAA playoff team to a college football scholarship and, years later, a return to the Bobcat sideline.

The 1977 connection

Greenbrier went 8–3, won District 8-2A and reached the TSSAA state playoffs for the first time. TSSAA records the playoff date as Nov. 11, 1977, with Trousdale County winning 22–0.

School banquet coverage from that season records that lineman Steve Sorrells had signed a football grant-in-aid with Austin Peay. The Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame independently records a football scholarship to Austin Peay and All-OVC recognition as a senior.

He later returned to Greenbrier as an assistant and became head football coach in 1988, making this one of the cleanest player-to-coach threads in the program’s history.

1977 Greenbrier All-Mid-State honors

The honors. The contemporaneous clipping places Darryl Hajdu on First Team, Steve Sorrells on Second Team and Don Fuqua on Third Team. A later school register lists Fuqua on Second Team, so both readings are preserved in the season record.
