The whole passage, without skipping the lean years
Greenbrier went 1–9 in 1983 and 0–10 in 1984. The response was immediate: the 1985 team opened 3–0, posted two shutouts, won five games and accepted a place in the 32nd Tobacco Bowl at Hartsville.
The 1986 team followed a 1–4 start with consecutive shutouts and a double-overtime win over Page. It reached the final week at 4–5 with a state-playoff berth on the line. Corlew’s ninth season closed in 1987, ending a 35–57 head-coaching run.
Sorrells took over at 27 with two returning starters. His first team went 2–8 and reached 2–3 before fading. His second improved only to 3–7, but the defense cut points allowed from 312 to 165. A 10–6 win at Portland finished a 3–3 closing stretch and supplied the clearest early sign of change.

The moments that hold the chapter together
1983 · one breakthrough
Kurt McBee ran for 185 yards and scored twice in the fourth quarter as Greenbrier beat East Robertson 21–7. The scoring lines also correct a 21–17 slip in the body of the newspaper story.
1985 · back to Hartsville
After the 0–10 season, Greenbrier improved by five wins. Aaron Sanders earned first-team All-Mid-State recognition and David Nichols was named Tobacco Bowl Defensive MVP.
1989 · the defense turns
The Bobcats allowed 147 fewer points than in 1988. Todd Williamson’s field goal and kick, Brett Pyles’ touchdown pass to Craig Reed and a late stop at the two beat Portland.
School totals, bowl reporting and the change of coaches
The school result remains primary; disagreements stay attached
The independent schedule differs from Greenbrier’s list on three 1983 scores and one 1984 score. Contemporary pages settle two of those questions, leave two open and create one additional printed slip inside the East Robertson story. The 1988 Macon report and school rushing record differ by two Craig Reed yards. None of those differences is silently normalized.
