The Turn Begins
The jump from 2–8 to 3–7 looks modest until the defense is separated from the record. Greenbrier allowed 312 points in 1988 and only 165 in 1989 — a 147-point reduction, or 14.7 fewer points allowed per game. Historical District 10 standings place the Bobcats fourth at 1–3, one place higher than the first Sorrells season.
The clippings catches that change before Week 1. A preseason feature says Greenbrier had roughly 42 players, up from 32 the year before, and quotes Steve Sorrells stressing weekly improvement rather than the previous 2–8 record. It also locks the calendar to 1989: the Springfield jamboree was Aug. 25 and the regular-season opener at Montgomery Central was Sept. 1.
Greenbrier won its jamboree quarter over McEwen 7–0. Todd Williamson threw the touchdown pass to Jamie Hire, and the sideline photo catches the celebration. The opener was almost as encouraging defensively: Montgomery Central scored with 45 seconds left to win 8–0. The game story credits Greenbrier with 154 total yards, Williamson at 5-of-8 passing for 50 yards, Brett Pyles 1-of-4 for 10, and Craig Reed with 69 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Four straight losses followed, but the fourth — a 14–0 defeat at Springfield in driving rain — was described in the next paper as Greenbrier's best defensive game in two years. The Bobcats then beat Houston County 21–6 for their first win.
After a 28–8 loss to Fairview left Greenbrier 1–5, another preview shows exactly where the team stood before East Robertson. Sorrells counted five missed scoring opportunities against Fairview, praised quarterbacks Todd Williamson and Brett Pyles, and singled out Chuck Allen on defense. Greenbrier answered by beating East Robertson 12–6.
The best new piece comes from the final week. After Westmoreland dropped Greenbrier to 2–7, Sorrells told the newspaper the team was “much stronger, much more competitive” than the year before and said the seniors had learned what it meant to give full effort. He called the Portland finale winnable. Greenbrier then went to Portland and won 10–6, finishing the last six games 3–3 and ending the year with its only District 10 victory.
The 100-yard rushing records adds one player-level marker: Craig Reed ran for 121 yards against Houston County, the top listed Greenbrier rushing game from the season.
