The first newspaper page in the scrapbook is dated July 14, 1988: Steve Sorrells had been named Greenbrier's head football coach. He was only 27, a 1978 Greenbrier graduate, a former Austin Peay player and a member of Greenbrier's 1977 district-championship team. He had already coached softball at the school and worked under Buddy Corlew, whose nine-year run had ended after the 1987 season. Kirk Williams stayed on the football staff, and Wayne Eidson remained part of the transition.

The preseason coverage is unusually candid about the size of the job. Roughly 40 players had signed up, but Sorrells identified only two returning starters — Scotty Knight and Chuck Allen . The field itself was described as dry, hard and short on grass because the facility had no water. Practice opened in heavy heat, and the scrapbook includes both a full-pad coaching photo and Todd Williamson cooling off during a break. The language used at the time was simple: Greenbrier was starting from the ground up.

The first breakthrough came immediately after the 27–0 opening loss to BGA. Greenbrier beat Macon County 28–12, its first district victory since 1986. The contemporary game story records a 7-yard Scotty Knight touchdown pass to Shannon Polen (spelled “Poland” in that article), a 67-yard Craig Reed run and two Knight rushing touchdowns. It also credits Knight with all four extra points. Greenbrier’s season records credit Reed with 109 rushing yards.

After losses to Trousdale County and Springfield, Greenbrier went to Houston County at 1–3. The preview says the Bobcats completed 5 of 13 passes against Springfield and that David Keith had rushed for 42 yards. The 13–0 Houston County win then pushed Greenbrier to 2–3. The Players of the Week clipping credits a Knight touchdown pass to Jamie Hire, a Brian O'Saile scoring run, an improving defensive line and a key Craig Reed interception. A second clipping adds Jeremy Hire's 60 yards on 12 carries, Joe Chabino's punting and younger players taking larger roles while injuries mounted.

That 2–3 mark was the high-water point. Greenbrier lost its final five games, but the late-season coverage is valuable because it shows what Sorrells was actually measuring. Before Homecoming against Hickman County, he was talking about younger players, leadership and learning as much as possible in the remaining four games. After the White House loss, the Bobcats had trailed only 14–7 at halftime despite missing or losing several starters; the article singled out freshmen Todd Williamson and Adam Marlatt and sophomore Joe Ward for being thrown into difficult varsity snaps.

The final record was still 2–8, but the district line improved from 0–5 in 1987 to 1–4 and fifth in District 10. The season is best read as the baseline for what comes next: the 312 points allowed in 1988 would fall to 165 one year later, a 147-point defensive improvement. The rebuild did not happen in one season; 1988 is where it became visible.
