2001 Season
Greenbrier opened the century with a difficult 3–8 season, but the record still ended in November. After five straight losses to open the year, the Bobcats found wins over Page, Cheatham County and Giles County.
The 48–20 Giles County win was the offensive high point of the season, and a contemporary clipping from the 2002 scrapbook adds the game details. Roger Herndon carried eight times for 147 yards and two touchdowns; Bobby George had 18 carries for 130 yards; Greenbrier totaled 396 yards of offense. The article also says the win clinched Greenbrier’s fourth playoff berth in four seasons under Kirk Williams.
McNairy Central ended the season 28–14 in the first round of the TSSAA playoffs. It was Greenbrier’s eighth consecutive playoff appearance. The result closed a difficult year, but the return to November and the available game film make 2001 the clearest prologue to the breakthrough that followed in 2002.
