Greenbrier split its first two games, then came within one overtime conversion of winning the region opener. A shutout at Portland followed, but the Bobcats answered with a 42–21 region win over White House Heritage. Through five games Greenbrier was 2–3 with a 133–145 scoring line.
The second half of the schedule changed the shape of the year. Fairview began a five-game losing streak, and Montgomery Central and Cheatham County followed with losses by seven and two. Springfield and White House closed the region slate. The final five games ended 0–5 and 90–195.
Those narrow outcomes matter: Creek Wood, Montgomery Central and Cheatham County beat Greenbrier by a combined ten points. But the schedule was also genuinely difficult. Seven opponents reached the playoffs, and all seven defeated Greenbrier. Springfield reached the Class 4A semifinals, Fairview reached a Class 3A quarterfinal and Montgomery Central reached the Class 4A second round.
The ten opponents finished a combined 60–53. Greenbrier went 1–5 in Region 5-4A, finished sixth, went 2–3 at home and 0–5 away, and closed 2–8 with a 223–340 scoring line. The independent historical record flags the 340 points allowed as a team season record.
In his third season as head coach, Elmore returned four core captains and asked a young quarterback room to replace 2017 starter Andrew Cline.
Captain and the school register's Region 5-4A running-back honoree. He entered the year after an 875-yard junior season, scored three times against West Creek and drove Greenbrier's scoring in the Creek Wood overtime game.
Captain and the register's defensive-back honoree. He ran for 225 yards and four touchdowns against West Creek, broke a 95-yard clincher against Heritage and supplied Greenbrier's score at Fairview.
The junior won the quarterback job. His touchdown passes to Nolan Duke, Travis Arms and Izik Rector appear in the surviving reports, and he completed 8 of 15 passes in the overtime region opener.
Senior receivers named in the school honor register. Arms caught the 47-yard opening score against Heritage; Ford was also one of the team's four captains.
The preview identified Stewart and Batey as the offensive-line bookends. Stewart was a captain and appears in the Region 5-4A honor register.
A young runner whose role grew late. He carried the final Cheatham drive, scored with 1:11 left and later broke a 79-yard touchdown against Springfield.
Greenbrier's school register lists Brandon Chambers, Micah Escue, Nathan Ford and Timmy Stewart as the 2018 captains.
Name check: the school honor register prints “Micah Esuce.” The preseason roster, captain register and contemporary reports consistently identify Micah Escue, which is the spelling used here.
