From Greenbrier to Middle Tennessee
A 1980 Greenbrier graduate, Trena played basketball and helped launch the school’s volleyball program. Her Hall biography credits her with senior-year district tournament MVP and All-Mid-State basketball honors.
Middle Tennessee’s 2019–20 basketball fact book lists her as a 5-foot-7 guard from Ridgetop, wearing No. 32 in 1980–81 and 1981–82. The university’s volleyball register also lists Trena Smiley for 1981–82.
A perfect night at the line
On December 8, 1980, Trena made all ten of her free throws against Tennessee State. Middle Tennessee preserves that 10-for-10 performance in its historical individual records. It is a documented college game performance, not a claim about today’s record ranking.
Back on the Greenbrier sideline
The Hall places Trena on Greenbrier’s volleyball coaching staff as an assistant from 2002 through 2007. Her playing career and coaching work connect the program’s early teams to its first TSSAA state championship in 2007.
