THE GIBBS ERA OPENS

A Hall-of-Fame team at the beginning of a long run

The Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes the 1979–80 Girls Basketball Team as an inducted team. The Hall's Jake Gibbs biography places that team at the beginning of his Greenbrier varsity coaching tenure, which ran from 1979 through 1993.

What we can prove now

The Hall identifies 1979–80 as one of Gibbs' coaching highlights and preserves the team as a Hall inductee. Its separate Gibbs profile documents the broader era: six district championships/tournament titles, seven conference titles, seven conference tournament championships, two Christmas tournament championships and 14 regional appearances.

The dedicated Hall team page is linked below. VOTC is not assigning a season record, championship list or roster here until those details can be independently read and cross-checked.

Hall of Fame context

This room uses the Hall for team-induction and coaching-era context. TSSAA remains the authority for state-tournament appearances and final scores.

The era it opened

1979Gibbs begins coaching at Greenbrier while also serving as principal.
1979–80The Hall later inducts this team and identifies it as one of Gibbs' career highlights.
1979–93The Hall records a 322–99 varsity mark, 14 regional trips and five Coach of the Year awards.
1985–86Greenbrier reaches the TSSAA Class AA state tournament and wins its quarterfinal.

No invented state claim

TSSAA lists Greenbrier's only girls basketball state-tournament appearance as 1986. The importance of 1979–80 is therefore presented through the Hall's team induction and its place at the beginning of the Gibbs era—not as a state-tournament season.

The payoff

In 1986, Greenbrier beat Obion County at state and came within one point of the championship game.
