After an opening loss to David Lipscomb, Greenbrier won three straight and stood 4–2 after a shutout of DeKalb County.

The Bobcats then hit a difficult closing stretch, but still returned to the first round of the state playoffs. The matchup brought a rematch with Marshall County, a team Greenbrier had beaten 21–12 during the regular season.

The 7–41 playoff loss became the final game of Steve Sorrells’s tenure as head coach. Derrick Lucas, the previous year’s Mr. Football winner, was in his senior season.

Captains & Leadership

Greenbrier’s captain register records a program-wide practice for this period: “1973–2001 Seniors were game captains.” The collection therefore does not assign a fixed season-captain list for this year unless a game program, roster or contemporary clipping identifies one.
