Steve Sorrells

A career that crossed eras

Sorrells played at Greenbrier before returning to the sideline. He served as an assistant from 1984–87, became head coach in 1988, and led the program through 1995. After his head-coaching tenure he returned to the staff, with the school coaching register listing assistant service through 2005.

The 1994 season became the high point of his head-coaching run: Derrick Lucas won Class 3A Mr. Football and Greenbrier returned to the TSSAA playoffs for the first time since 1977.

Inside the championship run

Coaching material preserved by the Sorrells family adds a behind-the-scenes layer to the later staff years. Three sheets preserve the 2002–05 offensive play menu kept in his coaching files, while two 2005 sheets preserve Greenbrier’s defensive preparation for Cheatham County.

The material connects his staff work to four straight landmark seasons: the first TSSAA playoff win in 2002, the first state semifinal in 2003, the first state-championship appearance in 2004 and the 2005 region championship.
