District champions and the first playoff
Sorrells’ Hall profile remembers the White House win and reaching the playoffs. The contemporary honors clipping places him second-team All-Mid-State, and the banquet page records his Austin Peay grant-in-aid.
Four Austin Peay seasons, then Greenbrier’s sideline
The Hall says Sorrells played at Austin Peay from 1978 through 1982 and earned All-OVC recognition as a senior. He later served Greenbrier as an assistant and head coach, connecting the 1977 breakthrough to the program’s 1994 playoff return.
From two returning starters to a defensive turn
Sorrells became Greenbrier’s head coach at 27 after serving as a Corlew assistant. His first team began with roughly 40 players and only Scotty Knight and Chuck Allen returning as starters. It went 2–8, reached 2–3 and earned the program’s first district win since 1986.
The second team improved only one game in the standings, but allowed 165 points after surrendering 312 in 1988. That 147-point change, a 3–3 finish over the final six games and the 10–6 win at Portland were the first measurable turn in the rebuild that later produced four straight playoff appearances.

From two returning starters to consecutive playoff teams
Sorrells’ eight Greenbrier seasons total 32–51 with 1,024 points scored and 1,665 allowed after the two corrected early-1990s finals are applied.
The climb ran from 2–8 in 1988 to .500 in 1992, the 1993 Crockett Bowl and the 1994–95 playoff appearances. His 1995 team made November before his head-coaching tenure closed.
