The First TSSAA Playoff

Greenbrier’s 6–0 start led to a district title and the first state-playoff date in program history.

The opening

6–0 · 146–44

Greenbrier beat Waverly, Lafayette, Centerville, Goodlettsville, David Lipscomb and White House in succession. Consecutive shutouts were followed by 47 points against White House.

District 8-AA

Four district wins and a championship

The outside standings list Greenbrier 4–0 in district play. After Brentwood Academy ended the unbeaten start, Greenbrier scored 42 against Portland and closed the regular season 8–2.

November 11, 1977

The first TSSAA playoff game

Trousdale County won 22–0 at 7:30 p.m. The official TSSAA tournament page opens its Class AA bracket that night and places Greenbrier–Trousdale among the eight first-round games. That official record resolves the outside schedule’s “second round” label.

After the season

Sorrells signed with Austin Peay

The banquet pages name Don Fuquay offensive MVP and Dwayne Bagwell and Darrell Hodges defensive co-MVPs. Steve Sorrells signed an Austin Peay grant-in-aid and carried the district-title season into a four-year college career.
