18Years coaching Greenbrier softball

Eighteen years with the Lady Cats

Larry “Pops” Williams spent 18 years coaching Greenbrier softball, according to contemporary reporting and his obituary. His years with the program included the 2003 state title and the 2014 runner-up finish.

Middle Tennessee’s biography of Nina Dever names Williams and Julie Head as her Greenbrier coaches. His obituary also records 33 years with the Nashville Fire Department and work as an assistant agriculture teacher at Greenbrier.

The field became a gathering place

When Williams died in April 2020, pandemic restrictions changed how the community could gather. Former players and friends returned for a drive-by memorial at the softball field.

In FOX 17’s report, Julie Head remembered his love for Greenbrier’s children. Former player and coach Janna Harris described being cared for as a person beyond the score of a game. Those memories belong beside the championship record.
