A difficult trip to Portland

One week after the Bell game, Greenbrier traveled to Portland and lost 68–0 to the school the Banner called Sumner High. The report records a 21–3 first-down advantage for the home team and six completed forward passes in eight attempts for 85 yards.

Jernigan was credited with six touchdowns, Honnicutt with three and quarterback DeLay with two. Those names and totals follow the printed account. Sumner High substituted an entire eleven during the last two periods.

The historical name matters here. The clipping locates Sumner High in Portland; the local school-history article identifies Sumner County High as an earlier name of Portland High. The archive therefore includes this game in the Portland series while retaining the name printed in 1927.

Two seasons later, the surviving score record lists a 26–16 Greenbrier win over Portland. The two results mark an early change in the series, although the available material cannot explain the personnel or tactical changes behind it.
