The line does not disappear. It bends.
Greenbrier’s early-1940s football record is uneven because the era itself was uneven. The surviving school record gives 1941 a complete 6–2 championship season, then increasingly incomplete schedules in 1942 and 1943, no football team in 1944 or 1945, and a postwar restart in 1946. Keeping those gaps visible tells a truer program story than smoothing them into a continuous season list.
Joe Henry Carter’s team finishes 6–2. The school record labels Greenbrier Robertson County Association champion.
Football continues, but the surviving records are incomplete. Known games stay public without pretending the schedules are whole.
The Greenbrier history records no football team in either season. Those blank years remain part of the timeline.
Jimmy Suter begins the postwar chapter. Four wins are documented; one Adams result remains unresolved in the surviving record.
George Fisher
The Athletic Hall of Fame identifies 1942 graduate George Fisher as captain of both Greenbrier football and basketball, with baseball and pole vaulting also part of his school career. His later Austin Peay career makes him a human bridge across the wartime break.
GEORGE FISHER →Jimmy Suter
The Hall recognizes Jimmy Suter, while the school coaching record places him at the head of Greenbrier’s postwar return. His 1946 season is preserved with its unresolved pieces intact.
JIMMY SUTER →1946 RETURN →What we can prove
The championship label and scores come from Greenbrier’s surviving school records. Fisher and Suter’s people context comes from the Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame. The wartime gap is presented as a gap—not filled with assumptions.
FOUNDATIONS CORRIDOR →Identity, championship, incomplete seasons and pause
The expanded 1939–45 story now follows the four-win 1939 team, the 1940 Bobcat vote, the exact arithmetic of the 1941 county title, the six unresolved entries of 1942–43 and the two no-team years.
Continue beyond the return
The next chapter follows every season from the 1946 restart to the perfect 1955 conference champions while keeping the unresolved Adams result open.
