First full-time—not first person to coach
The Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame identifies Carter as Greenbrier High’s first full-time coach of an eleven-man football team. The Village Green says the student newspaper The Voice called him Greenbrier’s first regular coach, then preserves Wilburn Shannon’s recollection that A. G. Capps and a Mr. Smith coached earlier.
The distinction resolves an apparent contradiction. Carter marks the regular, full-time coaching structure; he does not erase the pre-Carter names. The site’s 1927 football file remains attributed to A. G. Capps, while Carter’s file begins in the seasons that follow.
The football record Carter carried to 1938
The current archive attaches Carter to the 1928–43 coaching span, but early schedule survival is uneven. Newspaper reports make 1928 unusually detailed. The all-time score list leaves 1930, 1933 and 1936 blank; preserves two 1931 wins; gives single losses in 1932, 1934 and 1935; and lists a 1–1 fragment for 1937.
That is why no invented career record appears here. The defensible milestone is 1938: six listed games, six wins, four shutouts and a 228–20 scoring line.
From the perfect-season follow-up to the wartime file
Carter’s next team after 1938 went 4–1, winning four straight listed games and posting three shutouts. The 1940 team fell to 1–9 in the same calendar year Greenbrier’s students chose Bobcat as the school emblem.
The strongest late chapter came in 1941. Greenbrier finished 6–2, outscored its opponents 195–71 and is labeled Robertson County Association Champions in the master record. The six wins totaled 195–27; both losses came by shutout against Coopertown.
The record thins in wartime. The 1942 heading counts three known outcomes and leaves three opponent lines unresolved; 1943 counts four known outcomes and leaves three unresolved. The Hall says Carter began his insurance career in 1943. Greenbrier’s football coaching file attaches him through that season, but the available sources do not establish a precise final game or retirement date.
The coach across Greenbrier athletics
The Hall says Carter coached boys basketball from 1929 through 1943. His 1929–30 team finished 24–3 in the local history, won its district and traveled by train to Knoxville, where the surviving TSSAA bracket verifies a 3–1 state-tournament run. The 1930–31 team finished 18–2.
The Village Green describes 1930s improvements to the gym, including a balcony and relocated stoves, with logs donated from the community. That story helps locate Carter inside a growing school athletic culture. It does not supply missing football scores.
The Hall also preserves one earthy football detail: Carter sometimes had to insist that boys put on their helmets. He began an insurance career in 1943 but retained his enthusiasm for Greenbrier sports.
