The Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame identifies Jimmy Suter as a 1938 graduate who played football, basketball and baseball for four years. Its profile remembers an end-zone-to-end-zone interception return, then follows him back to Greenbrier as a coach.
The Hall also credits Suter and agriculture teacher James Whitlow with developing the football and baseball fields, including digging the holes for light poles by hand. Its page preserves a photograph of Suter’s first football team in 1946.
The known game rows
Suter’s football span runs from 1946 through 1951. The game-by-game history currently totals 19 wins, 20 losses and two ties, plus the Adams entry in 1946 whose result remains unknown. His teams’ clearest turns include a 4–1–1 season in 1947 and the 1951 recovery from 0–3 to a 3–1–1 finish.
Basketball, family and a wider legacy
Jimmy’s first basketball team in 1945–46 won the Sixth District championship. The Village Green places him in the middle of the three-year run that included his brothers Earl, Turner and Joe at different points. Earl was alternate captain in 1946–47, when Joe joined the squad.
The book’s boys basketball coaching list gives Jimmy 1945–1952. That basketball span is separate from the six football seasons summarized above. His Hall biography reports seven years at Greenbrier and 32 at Springfield.
Gene Beck credited Jimmy with helping bring him into athletics in the Spring 2008 TSSAA News. Springfield’s official Hall list includes Jimmy in its 2022 class; the 2020 beside his name is the nomination year.

Before he coached
The Village Green includes Jimmy among the players appearing in accounts of Greenbrier basketball in the 1930s and early 1940s. His 1938 graduation in the Hall biography places his playing years before the coaching chapter.
