From the pregame notebook for August 25, 2023. Team outlooks and Brier Beat updates below belong to that week. Selected quotations retain Jim’s broadcast voice, with light punctuation cleanup.

“It’s sure great to be back at home.”

Jim’s Portland script begins with the Bobcats returning to Greenbrier after the opener at Springfield. His notes describe a gutsy performance, a banged-up line and a reminder that a final score does not capture every part of a game.

That is the perspective he brings to the next challenge: Portland, a familiar opponent beginning a new chapter under head coach Hunter Hicks. The preview emphasizes the Panthers’ turnover in personnel and the uncertainty that surrounds teams so early in a season.

The Matter at hand tonight, another out of District Contest as we once again step up to Region 7-5A to take on the Purple Panthers of Portland.

Greenbrier’s priorities in the notebook are defense and ball control. The script then makes room for a familiar broadcast handoff.

We are inching closer and closer to kickoff here at Greenbrier and it’s sure great to be back at home.

From there, it is time to “Talk To Tom,” sending the broadcast to Tom Sorrells at the WKMG News 6 weather studios for the Friday Football Forecast.

The Brier Beat: more than football

The same document preserves a snapshot of the rest of campus. In Jim’s dated notes:

  • Girls soccer: the Lady Cats were headed to the Gatlinburg Cup after a 7–4 win at Watertown. The notebook records a 1–1–1 start and eight early goals for Blair Pierce, while highlighting returning county player of the year Emilie Sheltra.
  • Volleyball: senior Abby Stacy had announced plans to continue her education and play at Bryan College. Jim included congratulations in the broadcast.
  • Golf: the notes welcome coach Jay Spurlock and report Carter Stroup and Nathan Meals finishing first and second in the Robertson County Cup, with rounds of 68 and 69.

Those details are retained as observations from the August 2023 broadcast notebook. They capture what listeners were hearing about Greenbrier that week, alongside the football preview.
