Another Friday at the Brier Patch
IT’S FRIDAY NIGHT AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS! It’s time for another edition of Greenbrier Football!
The opening introduces Jim Sorrells, Kevin Criswell and special correspondent Andrew Haley, then thanks the people tuning in. Before the rivalry talk, Jim addresses a difficult opener at Springfield. There is no attempt to dress it up; the script acknowledges the disappointment and moves toward the opportunity in front of Greenbrier.
The White House preview focuses on Ranen Blackburn and the different ways the Blue Devils could use him. Both teams were coming off opening losses, giving an already familiar matchup an immediate sense of urgency.
Growing up with “the streak”
Talking about White House, it’s hard to say anything about the rivalry without at least mentioning “The Streak”.
The most personal section is about expectation. Jim describes what it meant to grow up in a program where the White House game so often ended the same way. The passage speaks from the perspective of a Bobcat who lived with that history, then watched the meaning of the matchup change.
As a kid growing up this program, it was something that many saw as “expected”. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR, you could set your calendar by it: Death. Taxes. White House defeats Greenbrier.
The script looks back to the breakthrough in 2005 and then returns to the team preparing to take the field in 2021. For meeting counts, season-by-season results and the maintained series total, use the White House series record. Working-script totals are not carried forward here as current statistics.
“It feels a bit different tonight.”
After the history comes a smaller detail that makes the notebook worth keeping: the players helping set the pregame soundtrack, and the energy Jim notices during warmups.
Kevin, it sure is good to be back home under the lights of The Brier Patch. We’ve seen a rejuvenated team warming up, we’ve got some new tunes spinning pregame courtesy of some of our Bobcat leaders… Kevin, it feels a bit different tonight.
The question that follows—what are you looking for from tonight’s contest?—brings the broadcast out of the past and back to the field. The notes also preserve the weather handoff to Tom Sorrells at WKMG News 6, another familiar voice in the Friday routine.
