William Pitt, Dwight Carroll and the trophy that carries their names
William Lynn Pitt, Greenbrier Class of 1966, was an All-Red River Valley Conference and All-Mid-State football player. The Hall of Fame credits him with nine punt-return touchdowns during his Greenbrier career.
After Pitt and Springfield athlete Dwight Carroll were killed while serving as Marines in Vietnam, local American Legion and VFW posts established the trophy awarded in the Greenbrier–Springfield rivalry in their honor.
The football connection
Pitt's playing years overlap Greenbrier's 1964 and 1965 Red River Valley championship seasons. His story gives those scoreboards a direct link to one of the rivalry's enduring traditions.
