BRIER BUILT · HALL CLASS OF 2011

Butch Savage

Before generations heard him in the press box, Butch Savage was a scorer on the basketball floor—and a young sportswriter.

A familiar voice, a scorer’s history

The Hall remembers William “Butch” Savage as the original “Voice of the Bobcats,” announcing home football games for nearly 30 years. His playing career came first: four years as a Greenbrier basketball starter from 1964–68.

The Hall credits him with 1,511 career points, a 689-point season and a 22-point scoring average. The Village Green independently lists the 689-point season under 1968. The Hall’s claim that it remained a school record is preserved as a historical claim; current ranking still needs a complete record review.

He covered the games, too

In its account of the Green Brier News in 1967, The Village Green says Butch wrote a sports column every week. The scorer, future announcer and local sportswriter were the same person.

The book’s recap of the newspaper’s March 2, 1967 issue records Greenbrier beating Gallatin 53–39 in tournament play. Gary Bedwell led with 20 points; Butch added 19. March 2 is the newspaper issue date, not a recovered game date.

A life around school sports

His Hall biography follows a basketball scholarship to Austin Peay, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and coaching at Clarksville Academy, Jo Byrns and Greenbrier. It also records service as a Greenbrier assistant principal and work officiating baseball and volleyball.

Butch played first base on Greenbrier’s inaugural TSSAA-sanctioned baseball team. His later public service included chairing the Robertson County Board of Education from 1995–2002.
