A safety, blocked-punt touchdown and interception turned a scoreless start into a 21-point run.
Aug. 21, 2020 · Away · Non-region opener · Greenbrier defeated Sycamore 21–9. Record after game 1–0; region record 0–0.
Greenbrier did not record a first down until its fifth possession, and Sycamore appeared ready to seize control when Nathaniel Havens intercepted Stoney Smith at the goal line. On the next snap the War Eagles fumbled through their own end zone, giving the Bobcats a safety and the ball.
Smith's scrambles set up Izik Rector's 8-yard touchdown. Nathan Robinson then blocked a punt that Rector returned for his second score, and Braxton Laney intercepted Grady McPherson before Smith found Silas Page for a 29-yard touchdown. Every Greenbrier point came during or directly after a turnover.
McPherson found Houston Hudspeth for a late 17-yard touchdown, but Greenbrier closed a 21–9 road win. It was the first game of a season played without preseason scrimmages or jamborees and with statewide COVID-19 limits in place.
