Perfect Again

Eight wins, no opponent above seven and a final five-game defensive squeeze.

Eight games, eight wins

A perfect defense gets better as it goes

Greenbrier allowed seven points in each of its first three wins. Across the final five, only White House scored at all. The result was a 128–6 closing run and four shutouts in five games.

The title is not inferred from perfection. The school score list prints the conference label directly beneath the last result, an 18–0 win at Ashland City. It was Greenbrier’s second perfect season in three years.

A player in the story

Dave Hall leads the scoring

The Greenbrier Athletic Hall of Fame says Hall played right end and led the football team in scoring as both a junior and senior. His junior season was this 8–0 championship year; in 1958 he captained both football and basketball.

The quarterback and the captain

Nalan Fox’s Hall biography identifies him as quarterback and captain of the unbeaten 1957 team.
