The comeback
The teams renewed their county matchup for the first time since 2002. Springfield was debuting head coach Kelly Meyers after an 0–10 season in 2008. Greenbrier, coached by Kirk Williams, had graduated more than 16 starters from its 2008 team and entered the season with only two returning starters on each side of the ball, according to the August 19 preview.
Springfield built a 12-point halftime advantage, but Greenbrier outscored the Yellow Jackets 19–6 after intermission. Junior Treavor Thaxton scored on a one-yard run early in the third quarter, then broke a 51-yard touchdown run with less than five and a half minutes remaining to put the Bobcats ahead for good. A botched Springfield punt also helped Greenbrier seize momentum in the second half.
The win improved Greenbrier's documented series record against Springfield to 4–9 and spoiled Meyers' head-coaching debut.
By the numbers
Springfield quarterback Darrel Ford also rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown; the article credits him with two passing touchdowns. Springfield receivers Brandon Farmer and Mantovris Young each caught a touchdown, with Young credited with six receptions for 94 yards.
Statistics reported in the August 26, 2009 edition of the Robertson County Times.
The 2009 Bobcats

They'd been teammates since seventh grade
The August 19 feature Head, Estes share unique bond profiled Greenbrier quarterback Mason Head and center Dillon Estes. The two had played together since seventh grade, and the 2009 season marked their third year together in the Greenbrier program. Their relationship gives this game's story a particularly fitting connection to the youth-football roots of the modern rivalry.
The 2009 preseason coverage also identified Ryan Morris, Matthew Bilbrey, Hunter Eden and other returning contributors as Greenbrier rebuilt its lineup.
