Two seasons at the start of the annual-playoff run
Smith succeeded Steve Sorrells in 1996. His first team began 0–3, won three straight and returned to the Class 3A playoffs.
Greenbrier’s coaching record gives Smith a two-season mark of 7–15. Both teams reached the postseason, extending the program’s run of annual appearances that had begun in 1994.

Two seasons, two playoff trips
Smith's second team finished 4–7 and returned to November, giving his two-year Greenbrier tenure a 7–15 record and a playoff appearance in each season.
The 1997 team beat Spring Hill 10–0 and carried a 4–6 record into the Brainerd first round before the coaching handoff to Kirk Williams.
