His season included large rushing games against Macon County and DeKalb County. The DeKalb story gives him 264 yards on 32 carries; the school register gives 259. The statistical difference stays labeled, while the performance itself is secure.
Six touchdowns and a playoff return
Lucas scored twice in the two-point Springfield loss and then carried 25 times for 271 yards against DeKalb County. The contemporary reports list six touchdown runs: 60, 4, 40, 28, 2 and 35 yards.
Before the Waverly playoff game, the newspaper gave Lucas 1,324 rushing yards, 27 touchdowns and 166 points. The day-after award story later reported 1,414 rushing yards and connected his season directly to Greenbrier’s first playoff appearance since 1977.
Class 3A Mr. Football Back of the Year
TSSAA’s award history lists Derrick Lucas of Greenbrier as the 1994 American General Mr. Football Back of the Year in Class 3A. The contemporary report identifies him as totally deaf and describes the work behind communicating plays from the sideline.
