Owsley’s two-year peak
Greenbrier followed a 2–8 season in 1970 with one of the strongest two-year stretches in the early record. Dan Owsley’s Bobcats went 8–3 in 1971, then 9–2 in 1972.
1971 · Greenbrier 16, McEwen 12
The Bobcats closed the 8–3 season by winning the Blanket Bowl at Springfield. An older internal score sheet carried 14–12, but Greenbrier’s accolades material and an independent Tennessee bowl-history record agree on 16–12.
1971 SEASON1972 · Greenbrier 22, Chapel Hill 6
Greenbrier came back with nine wins and repeated as Blanket Bowl champion, defeating Forrest of Chapel Hill 22–6.
1972 SEASONWhat the record can — and can’t — tell us
The two championship finals are preserved in Greenbrier’s school record and independently confirmed by the Tennessee bowl-history record.
The surviving Greenbrier postseason-honors register, however, moves from 1969 directly to 1973. That gap is preserved as a gap; it is not treated as evidence that the 1971–72 teams received no individual recognition.
