Three seasons, one unmistakable climb
Greenbrier's surviving head-coach records list Harold Fletcher from 1953 through 1955 at 19–9. The season pages show how that record was built: a 4–5 first year, a 5–4 second season, then a perfect 10–0 finish in 1955.
1953 · the start
Fletcher's first Greenbrier team finished 4–5. The surviving scores include a 43–7 win over White Bluff and establish the first step in a three-year rise.
1953 SEASON1954 · above .500
Greenbrier improved to 5–4, including a 26–0 win over White House. The program entered 1955 with consecutive year-over-year improvement.
1954 SEASON1955 · perfect
The breakthrough was complete: 10–0, 231 points scored and 51 allowed. Greenbrier beat White House 32–7 and closed the surviving schedule with a 25–6 Lower Cumberland Valley playoff/championship win over Ashland City.
The handoff
Fletcher's final team left behind an undefeated championship season. W. H. “Blue” Howse took over in 1956, beginning the run that produced the 1957 perfect team, the 1959 Strawberry Bowl championship and the Hall-of-Fame 1960–61 teams.
