Three seasons. One lasting memory.
Greenbrier’s boys won the Sixth District three years running in the mid-1940s. The Village Green remembers approximately 72 victories against three defeats, with each season ending in the Unit tournament semifinals.
The story crosses two coaches, Charles C. Parker and Jimmy Suter, and several Suter brothers. Earl played throughout; Turner captained the first team; Joe joined the third.
The championship run
| Season | Leadership | What the book records |
|---|---|---|
| 1944–45 | Coach Charles C. Parker Captain Turner Suter | 17–0 regular season; 24–1 overall. Beat Springfield by three points for the Sixth District title, then Clarksville in the Unit tournament before losing to West. |
| 1945–46 | Coach Jimmy Suter Captain Roy Anderson Alternate captain Richard Parker | Unbeaten regular season; another district title. North ended the run in the Unit semifinals. The book totals 50 games and two losses across the first two seasons. |
| 1946–47 | Coach Jimmy Suter Captain Hugh Johnson Alternate captain Earl Suter | Approximately 24–1; third consecutive district title. West again won the Unit semifinal. |
The approximately 72–3 combined record is a retrospective total, not a recovered list of all 75 games. Unit tournament results are not being presented as state-tournament appearances.
The 1945–46 team
Roy Anderson’s Hall biography explicitly reports 24–1 in both his junior and senior seasons, adding a second retrospective account for 1944–45 and 1945–46. It names West and North as the respective Unit semifinal opponents.

The 1944–45 roster
- Roy Anderson
- Willard Dorris
- Charles Fisher
- Billy Freeland
- Hugh Johnson
- Dick Jones
- Joe L. Morris
- Richard Parker
- Bobby Robb
- Earl Suter
- Turner Suter — captain
Coach: Rev. Charles C. Parker. The book credits Hugh Johnson with the Unit Two outstanding-player trophy and lists both Johnson and Turner Suter on the All-Unit team.
How the roster changed
For 1945–46, the book says Charles Fisher, Bobby Robb and Turner Suter departed, while Chad Choate and Gerald Williams joined. Roy Anderson became captain and Richard Parker alternate captain.
For 1946–47, the account explicitly retains Hugh Johnson, Earl Suter, Chad Choate, Willard Dorris and Billy Freeland. It names Richard Brown, Tommy Choate, Charlie Dorris, Ray Dorris, Joe Suter and Robert Tatum as new players. These names preserve the book’s account without assuming it supplies every player’s complete participation history.
