GAME STORY / CONTEXT

2005 vs. Pope John Paul II

The first game after Greenbrier’s 2004 state-final run came on the road against Pope John Paul II. Contemporary coverage framed the night around a young offensive line and a large group of new starters trying to step out of the previous team’s shadow.

The Knights struck immediately on an 86-yard opening kickoff return, but Greenbrier blocked the extra point. The Bobcats answered twice — Justin Pigg scored on the ground and Kyle Herndon later finished a third-quarter drive with a 1-yard touchdown — before Pope John Paul II recovered to win 20–12. The loss opened a season that would ultimately turn into a region championship.
